What is the largest, most powerful source of energy we have? It just has to be the sun. We have found ways to use sunlight, or solar energy, in different ways. We can heat with it, light, and cool our homes and other buildings. We can generate electricity with it. We can utilize commercial procedures with it and perform a variety of industrial processes. A great deal of our other sources have the sun as its basis. For example, is the wind blowing? Then you know the sun has been sending down heat to the earth. We can burn dead trees, not to mention a variety of biomass, for energy. The sun gave them all life. You would not have precipitation or evaporation if you did not have the sun. Nor would you have hydropower.
We refer to the power grid when we say “the grid”. It is the linked system that is supposed to deliver electricity to the people. Every general house has a power supply, access to natural gas and water; and not to forget, telephone. Living off the grid would mean not using these facilities and creating their own energy. For example; you are living off the grid when you are not having a water supply line at your home and are relying on the sewage and city water. Digging wells and using the cistern system for water supply is another way in which you can live off the grid.

Active solar heating systems use the warmth of the sun to collect heat in liquid or air reservoirs then a pump is used to distribute the air from the collector to the inside of the building. This type of solar heating system is most often used in homes because it can be used also to heat all of the hot water needed.
