Beginning novelists are often confused about imagination and inspiration, unsure of the specific roles each one plays and unsure of how the two interrelate.
The first tip is to focus on getting stronger. Most people who start a workout program usually focus on how they look on the outside. Instead of focusing on how you look on the outside, focus on how much stronger you are getting with each workout. Once I find a category, that interests me, I’ll begin to search for questions in that category. I’ll enter very generic questions like “Who” or “What” or “How” and the category. Sometimes, I’ll enter use just the category selection. In any case, I’ll end up with a list of search terms.
My friend left the table to visit the restroom, and I was left alone with my thoughts about our intense discussion. Had I really “heard” the message correctly in my own heart or mind? Make up your mind, consider the cost-benefits and make a decision. The space between doing and not doing is called ambivalence. Continuously dancing ‘the ambivalence dance’ is very tiring, disempowering and ultimately does not get you anywhere. Stop trying; just do it or don’t! Ultimately it is that easy.
The next time you hear the word “work” and it comes with a negative meaning, find a positive motivation. I’m betting that the task at hand will seem less “work-like”. And share that motivation with as many people as you can. Like a boomerang, it will come back to you (I guess, I’ve never actually thrown a boomerang but for the sake of this article let’s go with it.). The more lives you effect in a positive way, the stronger the boomerang effect will be.
